Yoshida Toshi was born in Tokyo in 1911. His father, Hiroshi Yoshida, was a genius painter of the Meiji era; his mother, Fuji Yoshida, was a pioneer of women painters; his younger brother, Hotaka Yoshida, and his wife, Chizuko Yoshida. The Yoshida family is a lineage of eight important Japanese painters spanning four generations. His father Hiroshi made the Yoshida family famous for his oil paintings, watercolors, and especially his woodblock prints. Tohshi followed in his father’s footsteps, broadening, deepening, and reinterpreting the Yoshida artistic tradition in the 20th century, becoming known worldwide to woodblock enthusiasts as a sensitive artist, and as a shrewd businessman, well stewarding his father’s artistic legacy. However, until now, Toshi Yoshida has only been featured within the context of the Yoshida family, and it seems entirely strange that such a world-class artist has not received the attention he deserves in Japan. We are pleased to present Japan’s first retrospective exhibition of Yoshida Tohshi in cooperation with the Fuchu Art Museum. Translated with DeepL.com (free version)
